Even if you do not have a college-aged child at home, please share this
with someone who does, and to anyone and everyone that comes to mind.
Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have
donated money for scholarships to African Americans, a great deal of the
money is being returned because of a lack of interest or awareness.

No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a
scholarship.

Take the initiative to get your children involved. Money shouldn’t be
returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it.

  1. Peggy Ross says:

Thanks for the information, but most of us still do not fit the criteria for the scholarship. We live in Ohio, and there doesn’t seem to be anyone to help me daughter.

  2. Sandra Carpenter says:

Accessing the applications is difficult. They are so long and complicated. I have filled out several and have virtually given up because, I do not believe that anyone really gets them. It is unfortunate, because I have a son who fits the criteria but we just have no luck!

  3. Ria says:

Nothing beats a failure but a try is the old cliche many people need to remember and then get moving!

I work at a high school in an impovrished area of my city. Those students who are trying to apply, work through the process and when they get stuck, seek help; are getting positive results.

Sure the process is tedious! Do you think that the funds should be delivered and then the class work be performed for you as well?

Many of my people arrive at college with 2 strikes against them; the schools they attended didn’t offer competitive education before they arrived at college and the student has no work ethic! No desire to do more than complain, listen to degrading music, watch vile video, film and television while using the phone as an appendage of the body that has ear buds inserted into the ears that are turned up so loud that one can hear the music from twenty feet away.

We must get back to basics and realize that we compete against not only the suburban affluent American students but also against those in Mumba?, Beijing and Jakarta. Wake up my people! As the word says, “My people parish for lack or knowledge.”

Now, get to work and fill out those applications. Many are due by 2.27.9 but there are some due the first few weeks of March. Get to it!

    I wish you good success…

    Grace, Peace and Blessings!

  4. Kristen says:

There’s a lot of black students like myself who are applying for scholarships. The problem is that most of them, including the ones on here, are not applicable. Most of them are very, very specific. As a suggestion to students, it’s often better to search for scholarships within your major or with the help of your school.

  5. Jones says:

I honestly feel many African American students don’t know about the scholarships and many African American families are from single parent homes. Many of our parent’s didn’t attend college so they know nothing about obtaining this information.

    Thank you

PS: I received an NAACP scholarship when I first went to college so once again thank you.

  6. Ken says:

A sad fact of life here in Southern New Mexico is that every year scholarships are not applied for. Our high school, the local community college, service clubs, churches, our NAACP branch, political parties, and others complain that no one is applying. We have a great branch of our New Mexico State University here in Alamogordo which in turn grants scholarships for higher education. It is frustrating.
